PCIA Lead Climbing Instructor Certification Module
Designed to go beyond the skills of PCIA or AMGA Single Pitch Certification, this is a rigorous two-day endorsement for already proficient instructors that enhances fundamental guiding skills.
This course goes well beyond the SPI course that utilizes lead climbing to set up base managed climbs to more comprehensively address critical skills associated with leading. The PCIA Lead Climbing Instructor module begins with setting up base managed sport or "trad" climbs by leading them and then quickly moves on to include intensive anchor and leading critique, instructor transitions, instructor safeguards while being belayed by a new belayer, belaying a client up as a second, releasing and lowering with self-locking belay devices, belay escapes, and rappel / lowering transitions for single clients. A PCIA Lead Climbing Instructor is expected to be able to confidently provide technical instruction in anchoring, belaying, rappelling, lead climbing and basic rescue.
Like other PCIA courses, it may be taken as a stand-alone module (pre-requisites) or coupled with preceding courses. Upon completion of all course components, certified Single Pitch Climbing Instructors are upgraded to Lead Climbing Instructors. There is no separate exam for this level. Open to PCIA and AMGA certified Single Pitch Instructors. This course is also an excellent front runner to the Rock Instructor Course.
